Introduction to Expert Systems: MYCIN
ثبت نشده
چکیده
MYCIN was the first large expert system to perform at the level of a human expert and to provide users with an explanation of its reasoning. Most expert systems developed since MYCIN have used MYCIN as a benchmark to define an expert system. Moreover, the techniques developed for MYCIN have become widely available in the various small expert system building tools. MYCIN was developed at Stanford University in the mid-1970s. It was designed to aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of meningitis and bacteremia infections. MYCIN was strictly a research system. AI investigators wanted to advance the state of expert system building by undertaking a hard problem with clear, practical ramifications.

Medical software tools began to emerge during the 1980's, some became known as 'expert systems'. In contrast to conventional software which process data, expert systems process 'knowledge'. For this reason, expert systems are also called ‘Knowledge Based Systems' (KBS). The most well known medical example is MYCIN.' This expert system was developed at Stanford University in 1976 to aid physicia...
متن کاملComputer-Based Medical Decision Making: From MYCIN to VM
We mentioned in the introduction to Chapter 5 that MYCIN provided a starting point for several additional research projects. The Ventilator Manager (VM) project of Larry Fagan had its beginnings in the MYCIN project but quickly diverged because of the dynamic nature of the intensive care unit (ICU) setting for which it was designed. MYCIN required a "snapshot" approach to patient assessment-tem...
متن کاملExpert Systems Methodology: a Conceptual Analysis
The application of emerging knowledge engineering techniques to expert and consultative systems has tended to out-run the development of a conceptual basis for such applications. This paper presents some conceptual analysis, within the domain of knowledge engineering, of expertise, rule-following and, in particular of competence, which is, perhaps, the crucial concept in the area. Examples are ...

As described 'in the introduction to GUIDON (Chapter 11), Clancey's work on that system led to an appreciation of the severe limitations of MYCIN's knowledge base if the system were to be used for instructional purposes (Clancey, 1983b). The NEOMYCIN research described in this chapter has been an attempt to rethink the knowledge structure and diagnostic strategy of MYCIN in view of requirements...
